Apple the world's No.1 Smartphone maker

A happy news for all Apple phone lovers that Apple overtakes Nokia to become the world’s No.1 Smartphone maker. Apple smartphone become the No.1 with a short span of for years. Apple's growth in the first quarter made it the number one mobile vendor among all US phone makers. Globally, Apple reached a record high of 3% global market share among all mobile phone makers.
According to the company's Q3 earnings report, Apple sold nearly 20.24 million iPhones last quarter, up 142% from the same quarter last year.

Strong sales of smartphones are "driven by healthy operator subsidies, competition between vendors, and a rising number of cheaper models," the report noted, citing Android and Symbian specifically as operating system platforms fueling growth in low cost handsets.

Meanwhile, Nokia is struggling to retain its leadership position by focusing on emerging markets. The company sold a record 21.5 million smartphones in the first quarter, but it largely sold cheaper models "in regions including China and South America, while North America remained a 'problem child' for the company," the report stated.

Strategy Analytics issued a report showing that Apple had, for the first time, overtaken Nokia in the worldwide market for smartphones, although Samsung, whose smartphone sales grew 520%, is gaining fast.

Sales of Nokia's smartphones powered by Symbian operating systems started to plummet in February after the company's chief executive officer announced transition from Symbian platform to Windows Phone operating system.

The latest update to Apple's mobile OS brings a handful of new features and squashed bugs, including high dynamic range photos, FaceTime calling from the Favorites menu, Game Center, and fixes for proximity sensor and Bluetooth audio problems. It is expected that these features will give more markets for Apple phones.
